Biodiversity is all around us – it's the variety of life on Earth, from the tiniest insect to a vast northern forest. Biodiversity is also about being connected – no species lives without other species that provide its food and habitat. We and all living organisms depend on this “life system” to sustain us. Biodiversity needs our protection.

Ecosystem services are the benefits that people obtain, either directly or indirectly, from our ecological systems.  These services can be understood in ecological terms and they can also be translated into economic terms through valuation studies.
