Summer Employment Opportunities (SEO) Program at the Ministry of Natural Resources

WHAT IS THE SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM?

 

Summer Employment Opportunities are full-time, temporary positions ranging from 7 – 16 weeks between May and Labour Day.

WHO CAN APPLY?

 

Applicants must meet ALL eligibility criteria and indicate how they meet these requirements through the on-line application process:

 

  • All summer jobs require "student" status. A student is defined as someone currently enrolled in secondary, or post-secondary institutions or within six months of graduation (e.g. if a student graduated in Dec. 2012, they could apply for an OPS summer student position up until June 2013).
  • Some jobs require students to be between 15 to 24 years old (up to 29 for a person with a disability) on the first day of employment; while other summer jobs don’t have an age restriction.
  • Students must be residents of Ontario.
  • Students must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

IMPORTANT DATES -- WHEN CAN I APPLY? 

 

There are three distinct application periods and all jobs are posted for 15 days: 

 

  • POSTING PERIOD 1: February 15th – March 1st, 2013

Target Audience: Post-Secondary students 

 

  • POSTING PERIOD 2: March 8th - March 22nd, 2013

Target Audience: Post-Secondary and High School students. Some positions posted during this period include Provincial Park positions and Travel Information Centre positions. 

 

  • POSTING PERIOD 3: March 29th – April 12th, 2013

Target Audience: High School students

HOW CAN I APPLY?

NOTE:

  • On the OPS Careers "Search" page, you can use the "Select Job Category" drop-down list to limit your search to just "Student summer employment opportunities at MNR/Parks" or to all "Student summer employment opportunities" at various ministries
  • Students are not required to submit a cover letter or resume in addition to the online application:
    • There will be specific text-based questions on the application form itself that will require students to outline their qualifications/skills and any volunteer/work experience that may be relevant to the job ad.
    • You will receive a confirmation email if you have successfully submitted your application. Please disregard the reference to submitting a resume and cover letter for the position.


WHEN DO THE JOBS START?

 

Position start dates vary, ranging from May to July. Managers will inform students of the specific start date during the interview stage.
 

 

WHAT TYPES OF JOBS ARE AVAILABLE?

 

There are over 1,300 Summer Employment Opportunities positions offered by the Ministry of Natural Resources this summer as well as hundreds of other positions at ministries across the Ontario Government.

The types of jobs essentially fall into three categories: 

  • Office jobs
  • Outdoor jobs (including Ontario Parks) 
  • Jobs at specific sites (e.g. laboratories).

The wage for these opportunities ranges from $10.25 to $11.10 per hour.
