How to apply for a summer position as a Stewardship Youth Ranger with the Ministry of Natural Resources. You could spend 8 weeks working outdoors on natural resource management projects in your own community.

 

How it works

 

You could be 1 of a team of 4 rangers and an experienced team lead. For 8 weeks you live at home and work in and around your own community on natural resource management projects.

 

You:

  • get hands-on work experience, education and training
  • develop personal and professional skills
  • develop career and community networks
  • receive minimum wage
  • earn 2 high school co-op credits (not available in all locations) 

Who is eligible

 

You could be eligible if you:

  • were born in 1997 – are 16 turning 17 in 2014
  • are an Ontario resident
  • are eligible to work in Canada
  • are capable of performing tasks outdoors, often in rough terrain and a variety of weather conditions 

Types of projects

 

Stewardship Youth Rangers take part in a wide range of projects that could include:

  • creating habitat for species at risk
  • monitoring the health of forests
  • maintaining Ontario parks
  • rehabilitating wetlands
  • helping with environmental and cultural community events

You might even have an opportunity to work in backcountry wilderness, which may involve overnight canoe trips to clear portages and maintain campsites.

Stewardship Youth Ranger positions are posted now until May 16, 2014.

  • Step 2: Prepare your application package. It needs to include:

a.  the Stewardship Youth Ranger Application Form

                 -- indicate if you are interested in getting summer co-op credits while you work

b.  cover letter

c.  résumé

  • Step 3: Submit your package directly to your chosen team location using the contact information given. You can apply to more than one team location, but the program does not provide overnight accommodation. 

Indicating that you’re interested in high school co-op credits doesn’t guarantee you will be eligible for them. Co-op credits are not offered at every team location. 

 

Application deadline

 

The application deadline for some of the locations has been extended to May 16, 2014. Other teams have closed their application period for 2014, as indicated. A complete list of team locations we are offering in 2014 is still available for your reference.

Applying to be a Team Lead

How to apply for a seasonal position as a Stewardship Youth Ranger Team Lead with the Ministry of Natural Resources. You could spend 12 weeks leading a team of four youths working as Stewardship Youth Rangers.

 

How it works


You could lead a team of 4 rangers. For 8 weeks you work in and around your own community on natural resource management projects.


You: 

  • provide group leadership, motivation and supervision to a team of Stewardship Youth Rangers on a variety of field projects
  • research and identify learning opportunities for the group
  • ensure the availability of required resources and equipment
  • ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations
  • work cooperatively with community partners to plan and implement stewardship projects
  • work on seasonally recurring contracts of up to 3 months
  • earn $21.49 - $23.94 per hour as a Resource Technician 2 

Who is eligible

 

We are looking for: 

 

Group leadership skills: 

  • you have working knowledge of the workplace safety legislations and related regulations (e.g. Occupational Health & Safety Act)
  • you can motivate and provide direction to SYR team members
  • you can assist with performance appraisals of team members

 Communication skills:

  • you can liaise with a variety of internal and external stakeholders (e.g. ministry staff, parents, community groups, clients, etc.)
  • you can explain technical information and instructions
  • you can develop written reports 

Technical knowledge:

  • you have knowledge of environmental stewardship activities (tree planting, stream clean-up, monitoring/removal of invasive species, etc.)
  • you are proficient in the operation of related tools and equipment (e.g. hand saws, hammers, shovels, etc.) 

General skills:

  • you have planning and coordination skills to manage projects and ensure required material resources are available
  • you have analytical and problem solving skills to monitor and evaluate project progress and effectiveness
  • you are proficient with a variety of computer software applications (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, electronic mail, etc.) 

Mandatory Requirements:

  • you hold a valid Ontario driver's licence – class “G” or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario
  • you hold or have the ability to obtain a valid Standard First Aid Certificate
  • you hold a have the ability to obtain a valid Pleasure Craft Operators Card
