Ontario’s wind resources can be used to generate renewable energy.
MNR’s wind power policy and the wind power site application process guide the development of wind power projects on Crown land. Environmental assessment and other approval requirements, such as the Application Review and Land Disposition Policy, help to ensure that Ontario's wind power resources are developed in an ecologically sustainable manner.
For those interested in developing wind power on Crown land, the renewable energy extranet site provides resources and current information about when to submit site applications.
The Ontario Wind Resource Atlas gives Ontarian's the ability to electronically view specific wind speeds and associated wind energy anywhere in the province. The purpose of the wind resource atlas is to help guide interested parties in wind energy development.
The mapping project, which began in November 2004, shows wind speeds and power densities at five different heights above ground level: 10m, 30m, 50m, 80m, and 100m.
