Waterpower

Ontario’s water resources are used to generate renewable energy.

MNR’s waterpower site release policy and procedure together with the waterpower site application process guide the development of waterpower projects through:

  • The development of greenfield sites (where no water control structures exist) on Crown land
  • The use existing Crown owned water control structures for electricity generation

Environmental assessment and other approval requirements, such as the Application Review and Land Disposition Policy, help to ensure that Ontario's water power resources are developed in an ecologically sustainable manner.

For those interested in developing waterpower on Crown land, the renewable energy extranet site provides resources and current information about when to submit site applications.

Aboriginal Involvement

Aboriginal people have a unique association both culturally and traditionally to the land they inhabit and use.

Ontario respects Aboriginal and Treaty rights, and is committed to fulfilling obligations to consult with Aboriginal communities. Among other things, MNR supports and encourages Aboriginal involvement through partnerships, and in site release and development.
