The Ministry of Natural Resources is currently undertaking a strategic policy review of renewable energy development on Crown land.
This policy review is being undertaken, given the importance of Crown land to supporting the Green Energy Act and the province’s Long Term Energy Plan.
The strategic policy will provide direction on a balanced approach to the management of Crown land for renewable energy including waterpower, onshore wind and solar power development.
Once complete, the strategic policy will provide the basis for the development of specific procedural and administrative direction.
The focus of the review will include:
- a framework and criteria supporting future decisions on where Crown land should be made available for renewable energy, including alignment with the Long Term Energy Plan direction on supply mix and transmission priorities;
- direction on how Crown land will be made available for renewable energy;
- the approach to Crown land management and Aboriginal economic development, along with other government incentive programs;
- policy alignment with existing direction in the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act, Far North Act and associated policy components thereof; and
- the role of the public, stakeholders, Aboriginal communities and other interests in the process of making Crown land available for renewable energy projects.
The draft Crown land renewable energy strategic policy will be posted to the Environmental Registry for public, Aboriginal community and stakeholder comment. Additional details of the timing of the Environmental Registry posting will be made available through the Ministry’s renewable energy website.
To receive updates on the policy review, please subscribe to the MNR Renewable Energy distribution list and you will automatically be sent notifications.
