Salt deposits in Ontario are found in the Windsor and Sarnia-Goderich areas near the eastern edge of the Michigan Basin, and form an extension of the Michigan salt deposits.
Salt beds were first discovered in the Goderich area in 1866. These salt formations are found at depths of 275 to 825 metres and range in thickness from 90 to over 200 metres.
Industry Overview
Two salt solution-mining sites located at Windsor and Goderich operate 19 salt solution mining wells. In 2006, salt solution-mining operations extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of high-purity salt used for human consumption and for the production of sodium and chlorine-based chemicals. Underground mining of salt also occurs at these two sites.
