In southern Ontario, most mineral rights are freehold. This means the landowner, not the Crown, owns mineral rights including oil and gas.
The disposition of crude oil, natural gas mineral rights and underground storage rights on freehold lands is not governed by any specific piece of legislation. However, the Gas and Oil Leases Act provides a means for titleholders to clear their title of defaulted oil and gas leases.
