Rules and Regulated Activities

The legislation governing Ontario's oil and gas tenure and activities on Crown lands is Part IV of the Mining Act and Regulation 263/02. For more details, view Mineral Rights on Ontario's Crown Lands.

There is no specific legislation for leasing oil and gas mineral rights or storage rights on freehold lands in Ontario.  However, the Gas and Oil Leases Act provides a means to clear title of defaulted petroleum and natural gas leases.  The Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Act governs well spacing and pooling, and provides a means for unitization of oil and gas mineral interests in Ontario.
