A big game draw is a tool used to randomly distribute hunting opportunities in the form of validation tags. The number of validation tags available is calculated by wildlife biologists based on the population goal for the herd and the number of animals that can be sustainably harvested. If the population is high, the number of validation tags can be increased to manage the growth of the herd; if the population is low the number of validation tags can be lowered to allow the herd to increase in size. In Ontario, draws are held for moose, elk and deer (an antlerless deer draw and a controlled hunt draw) validation tags.
In most cases, only Ontario residents with a valid hunting version Outdoors Card may apply to a big game draw. There are several ways to apply to big game draws:
