Who can hunt wild turkey?
Both residents and non-residents are eligible to purchase a wild turkey licence tag and hunt wild turkeys in Ontario after passing the Ontario Wild Turkey Hunter Education Course. The hunter will need a valid hunting-version Outdoors Card, a small game licence tag, a wild turkey licence tag and game seal, and permission of a land owner if hunting on private land. Those who harvest a wild turkey must report the harvest. (Refer to the Ontario Hunting Regulations Summary for details)
An Ontario resident with a Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card, and who has passed the Ontario Wild Turkey Hunter Education Course, may hunt with a mentor who is licensed to hunt wild turkeys. The apprentice must share the mentor's turkey licence tag(s) and bag limit. Apprentices under the age of 16 must have written parental consent (PDF, 16 kb) to take the course and acquire the Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Card.
How do I purchase a wild turkey licence tag?
There are four ways for Ontario residents to purchase a wild turkey licence tag; there are three ways for a non-resident to purchase a wild turkey licence tag. Cost of the licence tag in 2014 is $28.62. Note that the tags for the April-May season are sold starting March 1; the tags for the October season are sold starting September 4. The tags are not interchangeable. A hunter may purchase a maximum of two spring licence tags and game seals; a maximum of one licence tag and game seal is permitted for the fall hunt.
Telephone Application System – Ontario residents can call 1-800-288-1155 from March 1 to April 6 to purchase a spring wild turkey licence tag. Wild turkey licences purchased by telephone will be mailed and should be received in 10-12 days.
Internet – Both residents and non-residents can go to the website, ontario.ca/outdoorscard, to purchase a spring wild turkey licence tag until April 6. A small game licence tag is also available online. Wild turkey licences purchased online will be mailed and should be received in 10-12 days.
ServiceOntario Centre – At participating ServiceOntario centres a representative will assist residents and non-residents in purchasing wild turkey and small game licence tags. Get a list of ServiceOntario centres providing this service. Hunters who wish to purchase a spring wild turkey licence during the month of May, or who wish to purchase a fall wild turkey licence in September or October, can do so at a participating ServiceOntario centre.
Licence Issuers – All license issuers are selling wild turkey and small game licence tags to residents and non-residents. Get a list of licence issuers (searchable by city). Hunters who wish to purchase a spring wild turkey licence tag during the month of May, or who wish to purchase a fall wild turkey licence tag in September or October, can do so at a licence issuer.
