To hunt in Ontario, Ontario residents need a hunting-version Outdoors Card and all applicable licence tags. An Ontario resident Outdoors Card is a plastic, wallet-sized card, issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources to accompany all applicable licence tags. The cost of a resident Outdoors Card, excluding licence tags and game seals, is $9.68. The Outdoors Card is valid for three calendar years and is used for identification and administrative purposes.
Ontario recognizes two classes of resident hunting Outdoor Cards based on the hunting methods for which the hunter is accredited (gun or bow and arrow). Hunters will be designated as either H1 or H2:
- The Class H1 card permits the cardholder to hunt with all methods permitted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997.
- The Class H2 card permits the cardholder to hunt with all methods permitted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997, except guns.
To be a fully licensed hunter in Ontario, residents must be at least 16 years of age and meet the following criteria:
- Must have an Ontario Hunter Education Exam Certificate OR an Ontario resident's hunting licence or hunting licence verification certificate which must have been issued to you after January 1, 1968 and before January 1, 2006.
- If applying for a Class H1 Outdoors Card, proof of passing the Canadian Firearms Safety Course is also required.
PLEASE NOTE: First-time hunters must purchase their Outdoors Card in-person, at participating ServiceOntario centres. You will be issued a temporary Outdoors Card that you must keep with you until you receive your permanent card in the mail.
