This report explains the use of thinning for managing jack pine in northern Ontario. It gives case studies of the Balmer and Seine River forests. These were planted in the 1940s and thinned during the 1990s.

This paper reviews the factors that are important for white and black spruce growth on boreal mixedwood sites. A case study for the Seine River Forest is given. The trial was cut in the 1950s and ‘60s and planted and treated through the 1970s and ‘80s.

This paper gives guidelines for improving the early growth of young planted jack pine forests through various tending activities. There is also discussion about the pros and cons of each technique.
