Northwest Science and Information (NWSI) publications offer the most current science on forests, fish, and wildlife to resource managers in northwestern Ontario.


Aquatic Updates are available in PDF format only. These short reports contain recently analyzed data on fish communities in inland lakes in northwestern Ontario. They are published in English only.

  


Changes in the Winter Fishery of Greenwater Lake Following a Reduction in Fishing Season Length. Amtstaetter, F. 2006. Ont. Min. Natur. Resour., Northwest Sci. and Info., Thunder Bay, Ont. NWSI Aquatics Update 2006-1. 2 pp.

 

Greenwater Lake, west of Thunder Bay, supports a lake trout recreational winter fishery. An angler survey or creel assessed the number of anglers and their daily catch. Lake trout catches declined from the start to the end of the season.

Nearshore Community Index Netting in Lac Des Mille Lacs: 1993 to 2004. Wright, J. 2005. Ont. Min. Natur. Resour., Northwest Sci. and Info., Thunder Bay, Ont. NWSI Aquatics Update 2005-3. 4 pp. 

 

Smallmouth bass are established in Lac des Mille Lacs, west of Thunder Bay. Nearshore trap netting (NSCIN) took place in the central basin in late summer and fall of 1993, 1994, and 2004. Numbers of smallmouth bass are generally low with the exception of one basin.

The Status of Walleye in Lac Des Mille Lacs: A FWIN Summary. Amtstaetter, F. 2005. Ont. Min. Natur. Resour., Northwest Sci. and Info., Thunder Bay, Ont. NWSI Aquatics Update 2005-2. 6 pp.

 

Lac Des Mille Lacs, west of Thunder Bay, supports a sport walleye fishery. Fall walleye index netting (FWIN) took place over three years (1993, 1994, and 2002). High numbers with slow growth describes this fishery.

Fish Community Response to the Walleye Recovery in Henderson Lake. Amtstaetter, F. et al. 2005. Ont. Min. Natur. Resour., Northwest Sci. and Info., Thunder Bay, Ont. NWSI Aquatics Update 2005-1. 5 pp.

 

Henderson Lake in northwestern Ontario is closed to fishing. Spring trap netting and fall walleye index netting (FWIN) was used to assess the walleye population size and health. The population size has increased since the late 1980s.

Henderson Lake in northwestern Ontario is closed to fishing. Trap netting and fall walleye index netting (FWIN) was used to estimate the walleye population size and health. A high density, abundant age class population exists.

Fall Walleye Index Netting (FWIN) and Trap Netting Summary for Niobe Lake, 2000. Cano, T. 2002. Ont. Min. Natur. Resour., Northwest Sci. and Info., Thunder Bay, Ont. NWSI Aquatics Update 2002-1. 5 pp.

 

Niobe Lake, near Atikokan, has a walleye, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and lake trout fish community. Fish populations are assessed using nearshore trap netting (NSCIN) and fall walleye gill netting (FWIN). The Niobe Lake fish community appears healthy based on the 2000 assessment program.

Mortality of Live Released Walleye During a Shallow Water Ice Fishing Derby on Lac Des Mille Lacs, Ontario, 2001. Cano T., and J. Wright, et al. 2001. Ont. Min. Natur. Resour., Northwest Sci. and Info., Thunder Bay, Ont. NWSI Aquatics Update 2001-2. 4 pp.

 

Lac Des Mille Lacs, near Thunder Bay, supports a walleye winter fishery. Catch and release survival was assessed during a two-day derby. Mortality was related to the depth and hook placement.

1988-1999 Lake of the Woods Muskie Angler Diary Surveys. Duffy, M. and T. Mosindy. 2001. Ont. Min. Natur. Resour., Northwest Sci. and Info., Thunder Bay, Ont. NWSI Aquatics Update 2001-1. 6 pp.

 

Lake of the Woods in northwestern Ontario has an open-water muskie fishery. From 1995 to 1998, resort owners gave out diaries to their guests. Data from the diaries helps to manage the fishery.

Seasonal Variations in Trap Net Catches of Smallmouth Bass in Two Northwestern Ontario Lakes 1998-1999. Wright, J. 2000. Ont. Min. Natur. Resour., Northwest Sci. and Info., Thunder Bay, Ont. NWSI Aquatics Update 2000-1. 4 pp.

 

Smallmouth bass can be found in Crooked Pine and Pekagoning lakes near Atikokan, Ontario. Habitat preference of bass can be determined from fall walleye index gill netting (FWIN) and early summer trap netting (ESTN). Healthy bass populations exist in both lakes.
