Northeast Science and Information (NESI)

Northeast Science & Information (NESI) is one of three regional sections in the Science  and Information Branch (SIB) of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).

Our Goal

As part of the Science and Information Branch, NESI is committed to the fulfillment of SIB’s goal:

“We collaborate with our clients by providing relevant expertise together with science and information products for natural resource management and reporting.”

What do we do?

We provide knowledge, information products, and services to clients in Northeastern Ontario that help support the management of our natural resources and ecosystems. Our work supports the priorities outlined in MNR’s strategic directions document, Our Sustainable Future, and the goal of ecological sustainability.

NESI has expertise across a range of scientific and technical areas in natural resource management and information management. These include:

  • aquatic ecology
  • communications
  • data management
  • fish and wildlife population management
  • forest ecology
  • geographic information systems
  • hydrology
  • knowledge transfer

In addition to developing new knowledge, we use what is already known to provide training, client outreach and extension services to further improve natural resources management practices and policies. We recognize information is a key asset, one that we try to make accessible.

Who are our clients?

Our clients are government and private sector resource managers who are responsible for natural resource management of Crown lands and waters in Northeastern Ontario.

Who do we work with?

NESI staff work with colleagues across the MNR and external partners and clients. We participate in provincial and regional management forums as well as provincial technical teams and committees. We also partner with numerous ministries, educational institutions, industry and other organizations.

Where are we located?

We are located at the Ontario Government Building in the MNR Regional Office on Highway 101 E. in South Porcupine. Science specialists, support staff, the Manager and the Science Coordinator are located on the 2nd Floor of the “B” wing; the Information Management Services Unit, including Geomatics and the Information Management Coordinator are located on the 1st Floor of the “K” wing.
