The walleye is the most valued fish species in Ontario. It is highly prized by anglers and provides important recreational fishing opportunities.
In 2001, the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) began a walleye study in Southern Ontario because declines in fishing quality had been reported. The purpose of the study was to determine the status of walleye populations. This study was similar to others previously completed in northwestern and northeastern Ontario.
Information on what the MNR has learned about walleye populations in Southern Ontario is available online in the Walleye State of the Resources Report for Southern Region.
In 2004, the Minister of Natural Resources announced a provincial review of walleye regulations as a component of the New Ecological Framework for Recreational Fisheries Management in Ontario.
