Champlain Bridge

shoreline at Champlain Bridge
Directions: From Highway #417 (The Queensway) take exit #123 (Island Park Drive). Follow Island Park Drive north to where it crosses the Ottawa River. At the bridge take the entrance on the right, just on the south side of the bridge. This one-way road makes a counter-clockwise loop around the island and returns to the bridge from the southwest side. There are lots of parking areas on the loop. In addition to being easily accessible by car, this area is accessible by the National Capital Commission bicycle path.

Description: A beautiful location in the middle of the Ottawa River, Bate Island provides an excellent view of the Ottawa River. Shoreline fishing is available but access to water is restricted by fencing in a lot of places. The fast water downstream from the southern end of the Champlain Bridge attracts wading fly fishers seeking river bass during the summer months. Also, fly casting is taught at this area by one of the fly shops in Ottawa. Caution should be used when fishing; the water is fast here and the currents are strong. Halfway across the bridge, the park at Bate Island offers shore fishing in the current along both sides and the quieter waters at the east end. A narrow sand opening on the north side of the island is a popular launch for kayakers who practice their whitewater skills in the rapids. Canoes can also be launched from this spot to fish below the Remic Rapids primarily for smallmouth, walleye and the occasional perch.
