Muskellunge are highly prized by many anglers and Ontario offers some of the finest angling opportunities in the world. With more than 300 lakes and almost 100 rivers supporting muskellunge populations, we offer an incredible diversity of opportunities and experiences, including the chance to top Ontario's current record of 29.5 kg (65 pounds)! It is important that management actions be taken to ensure Ontario's muskellunge are sustained in the future. Anglers are encouraged to help with the Cleithrum Project.
The Cleithrum Project is the provincial repository for biological data on muskellunge and northern pike. The cleithrum (a crescent shaped bone under the gill flap) should be removed from any fish found dead or which has been angled and is being kept for food or mounting.
Information on the size of the fish, such as length, weight and girth, and the body of water where the fish was obtained should be recorded and submitted along with the cleithrum bone(s) to:
