- A Survey of 2012 Competitive Fishing Events in Ontario
2012. Steven J. Kerr, Biodiversity Branch, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
Summary: This report summarize the results of a survey of competitive fishing activities which occurred in Ontario during 2012. Information on 1,068 events -- the most ever documented in the province --was tabulated. Competitive fishing events were generally short (i.e., 1-2 days) in duration and held during the spring or summer. Most events were held on the lower Great Lakes and inland waters of southern Ontario. Twenty-two different waters supported more than ten competitive fishing events in 2012. Lake Erie had the most competitive fishing events (72) of any waterbody in Ontario. Bass were the most targeted fish species by competitive anglers but events have diversified over recent years and a total of 28 fish species were identified for different events in 2012. There appears to be an increase in the number of fishing events for youth.

Muskellunge have some unique features that leave them vulnerable to the stress of capture and handling. Competitive fishing activities for muskellunge where fish are held for periods of time should generally be discouraged. However, these guidelines were created to provide best management practices for organizers and participants in tournaments that are directed at muskellunge.
