A Review of Lake Sturgeon Habitat Requirements and Strategies to Protect and Enhance Sturgeon Habitat
2011. Kerr, Steven J., Michael J. Davison, and Emily Funnell, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
Summary: Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) have recently been designated by the Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Ontario as a threatened species in northwestern Ontario and in the Great Lakes drainage basin. The lake sturgeon receives protection under the Endangered Species Act (2007), which requires that a recovery strategy be developed within two years of a species being listed as threatened. Habitat provisions are to be included in the recovery strategy as well as implementation goals. This report has been prepared to summarize lake sturgeon habitat requirements, to provide a synopsis of the impacts various activities may have on lake sturgeon habitat, and to review habitat mitigation and enhancement strategies which have been employed in various jurisdictions to date.

A Synopsis of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) Culture, Marking and Stocking Techniques
2011. Smith, A. L. and D. Hobden, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
Summary: This document consolidates information on lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) culture, marking, and stocking techniques as well as existing conservation stocking programs as background for the development of Ontario's lake sturgeon recovery strategy. Overall the application of lake sturgeon culture and stocking as a conservation strategy may be an essential tool required to rehabilitate Ontario lake sturgeon populations. It is reasonable to believe that lake sturgeon culture techniques are sufficiently developed to enable the species to be grown in a suitable hatchery environment.

Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) Stocking in North America
2009. Smith, A.L. Fish and Wildlife Branch, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. 17 pp + appendicies
Summary: Stocking has been used as a management strategy to rehabilitate or reintroduce lake sturgeon throughout their range in North America. This document consolidates information on lake sturgeon stocking programs, provides insight on the common factors affecting programs, evaluates the use of stocking as a management tool, and examines practices currently adopted by various management agencies.

- The Lake Sturgeon in Ontario
2009. Fish and Wildlife Branch, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. 48 pp + appendicies.
Summary: This document has been prepared to assemble and consolidate existing information on lake sturgeon in Ontario as a background reference document for the development of a provincial lake sturgeon management strategy or recovery plan. It outlines the biology, life history, habitat requirements and status of lake sturgeon. Current and future threats to the sustainability of lake sturgeon are also discussed.
