Fisheries Management Zone 10 (Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury)

Fisheries Management Zone 10 (FMZ 10) lies north of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Its eastern border extends northwards from the mouth of the French River to Elk Lake.  The western border follows the east shore of Lake Superior from Sault Ste. Marie north to Wawa.

Some of the major cities within FMZ 10 include Sudbury, Espanola, Blind River, and Sault Ste. Marie.  Neighbouring communities in close proximity to FMZ 10 include Wawa, Chapleau, Gogama and Elk Lake. FMZ 10 includes the "Specially Designated Waters" of the French River and Manitoulin Island.

This zone has the highest road and population density of all the Northeast Region zones.  The landscape is characterized by the Ontario shield's shallow soils, ancient bedrock and boreal forests. This zone also has more lake trout lakes and brook trout lakes than any other northeast zone. Numerous streams flow into Lakes Superior and Huron and the inland lakes are generally small, deep and clear.

The goal of fisheries management in FMZ 10 is to maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems that provide sustainable benefits, contributing to society's present and future requirements for a high-quality environment, wholesome food, employment and income, recreational activity and cultural heritage.

The Ministry of Natural Resources, with the support of the Fisheries Management Zone 10 Advisory Council, has developed a strategy to manage lake trout in Zone 10. A number of regulatory options based on this strategy were presented to the public for comment in the spring of 2009.

Based on the comments received, recommendations of the Fisheries Advisory Council, and the best available science, the ministry has developed new fishing regulations for lake trout in Zone 10, yellow perch on Manitoulin Island and walleye in the French River.

These regulations will be put into effect for 2010. These changes are intended to improve fish populations, as well as increase angling and recreational and economic opportunities in Zone 10.
