Overview
The Southwestern Ontario Orthophotography Project (SWOOP) was initiated in 2006 by the County of Lambton in partnership with LIO and a number of other organizations. Through this project, high resolution orthophotos for approximately 42,000 square kilometres of land in south-western Ontario were captured, making it one of the largest orthophotography projects in North America. A total of 72 partnership agreements were signed with public and private sector organizations to share the project's $1.6 million cost.
As a result of the large number of partners involved in SWOOP, and the use of high-accuracy, low-cost digital camera technology, acquisition costs were significantly reduced and millions of tax dollars were saved. The large project area also resulted in lower overhead costs and long, more efficient flight lines.
