The Ministry of Health Promotion’s Ontario Trails Strategy is an exciting, long-term plan to promote the management and use of recreational trails across Ontario.
To support this special initiative, LIO is collecting trail information and has developed a database called the Ontario Trail Network (OTN). LIO is also working with trail users and managers to define data collection methods, standards and long-term data maintenance approaches.
The OTN will eventually include information on all trail networks in urban, rural and wilderness settings, including natural trails, bicycle routes, walkways, boardwalks and sidewalks and waterway and portage routes.
Other government ministries and organizations will be able to use the OTN for planning, analysis and emergency management. For example, current and accurate trails data can help decision makers determine potential impacts of provincial roadway expansions on recreational trails.
Trail data is available for download at no cost from the LIO Warehouse.
Do We Have Your Trail?
LIO has developed a Google map that shows trailhead locations in Ontario. The data included in this map is based on GIS/GPS coordinates provided to us by trail organizations.
Whether you like walking, jogging, hiking, birding, cycling, in-line skating, equestrian activities or canoeing you will find a trail that meets your needs.
The maps can be viewed with either traditional map or satellite imagery backgrounds. Users can select “Find A Trail” to scroll through a list of trails or use the zoom-in/zoom-out feature to find a specific trail.
We depend heavily on input from municipalities, conservation areas, trail organizations and outdoor enthusiasts for trail information. If you do not see your trail on this map and would like to provide us with your trail information, please contact us by email at lio@ontario.ca.
Note: When planning a trip, please confirm the trailhead location, trail condition and usage restrictions with the trail organization.
