Ontario Road Network

The increasing popularity of location-based services such as emergency vehicle dispatch, school bus routing and in-car navigation systems has led to increased public and private sector demand for reliable information about Ontario’s road infrastructure.

Land Information Ontario is partnering with municipalities, provincial government ministries and federal government departments to capture detailed information on Ontario’s municipal roads, highways and resource access roads in a standardized database called the Ontario Road Network (ORN).

The ORN currently contains attributes for more than 234,000 kilometres of roads with a positional accuracy of 10 metres or less. The attributes describe road characteristics such as street name and road number, address information, road classification, surface type and condition, direction of traffic flow, and speed limits.

Benefits of the ORN:

  • Ontario’s road information is available in a standardized database that can be accessed by all three levels of government and shared with the private sector.
  • Private sector can use government maintained data to incorporate into in-car navigation systems and other location-based applications.
  • Up-to-date road information supports government services such as emergency vehicle dispatch (police, fire and ambulance), emergency evacuation and even efficient school bus routing.

ORN Partners:

  • Regional and Local Municipalities
  • Provincial Government Ministries: Natural Resources, Health, Transportation, Education and Community Safety and Correctional Services (OPP)
  • Federal Government Departments: Natural Resources Canada, Elections Canada and Statistics Canada

Accessing ORN Data:
The ORN is available to registered users through the LIO Warehouse. Registered users are members of LIO’s Data Exchange and have signed an Ontario Road Network agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources.
