What is a Web Service
Web Services perform simple or complex functions and are available over the Internet. Although Web Services have the ability to run independently, they are more often part of a larger solution, integrated into a bigger application or website. Web services often provide remote data access, data transformations or other data functions. Since Web Services are operated by the service provider, the use of Web Services can reduce development time, ensure current data and save on hardware costs for Web Service consumers.

Land Information Ontario (LIO) offers a number of geographic Web Services that users can either embed into applications or run independently. These Web Services are based on Ontario data and explicitly limit queries and results to Ontario.

How can I add records to LIO's Data Directory?
LIO encourages organizations to upload their metadata to the Data Directory so all geographic data holdings can be discovered through the Directory’s search tool.

Please contact us at (705) 755-1878 or by email at lio@ontario.ca to find out how you can upload your geographic metadata to LIO’s Data Directory.

What is a SNIF Package?
SNIF (Standard NRVIS Interface Format) is the format used for data sets that are ordered from the LIO Warehouse.

A SNIF package may contain:

  • Package header information, which provides metadata about the package content, including the data source
  • File with the spatial data projection information
  • The spatial geometry of the data
  • The non-spatial (attribute) data elements of the data set which are associated to the spatial objects in the SNIF package. This data is extracted from many different database tables and is provided as custom text files in the SNIF package.

What is a SNIF Report?
A SNIF Report is a document that describes the contents of the data sets that are provided from the LIO Warehouse to a data subscriber, including data field names, field lengths, explanations of possible code values, etc. The Report also includes an entity-relationship diagram showing the tables and their inter-relationships.
