The Land Information Ontario (LIO) GeoCoder is a Web Service that converts Ontario addresses, municipal names, and postal codes from text into geographic coordinates for display as points on maps.
Once an address becomes a geographic location it is possible to track contacts, cases, incidents and issues geographically. It is also possible to perform spatial analysis, look for patterns, and project trends using any one of the many Geographic Information System (GIS) software packages currently available. These analyses can then, themselves, become reports and maps to illustrate market activity, provide driving directions, assign staff to work, highlight areas of recurring problems and successes, or support asset management.
The original text used as input can be either freeform or parsed into its constituent components. The GeoCoder makes use of three critical datasets in the LIO Warehouse to derive the spatial coordinates: Ontario Parcel, Ontario Road Network, and Postal Code. Note that LIO GeoCoder cannot be used on its own and is usually embedded in an online application.
