WHAT IS A WEB MAP SERVICE (WMS)?
A LIO Web Map Service (WMS) gives you the ability to display data in the LIO Warehouse directly in your map without having to have a local copy of the data. WMS are intended to display spatial data as background information and should not to be used for true geographic analysis.
A LIO WMS typically consists of multiple layers, each layer representing a unique data set in the LIO Warehouse. Users tend to add several LIO WMS’s, as well as WMS’s for other sources, to their map and then select the layers they need from each of these services.
LIO’s WMS can be used in custom, interactive web maps or by most commercial GIS software. WMS’s are compliant with international standards defined by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC).
