Web Services

Web Services are applications or mini-applications that are available online to perform simple or complex functions. Although Web Services have the ability to run independently, they are more often part of a larger solution, integrated into a bigger application or website. Applications access Web Services through web protocols such as http and XML. Web Services can work with virtually any programming language the developer chooses to utilize.

End users of websites or business applications that use Web Services can be located anywhere in the world. The use of Web Services reduces time in developing new or upgrading existing functionality and saves on local data storage.

Land Information Ontario (LIO) offers a number of geographic Web Services that users can either embed into applications or run independently. These Web Services are based on Ontario data and explicitly limit queries and results to Ontario.

LIO Web Services include:

Web Map Services (WMS)
Address Parser
GeoCoder

Please note that LIO’s Internet Mapping Framework (IMF) is only available to Ontario Government ministries.
