Geographic Names

OVERVIEW

Geographic names, or toponyms, are a fundamental geographical reference system that allow us to describe our surroundings and navigate from place to place. From the beginning of time, geographic names have been assigned to cultural and natural features on the landscape including cities, towns, rivers, lakes and islands.

Geographic names are much more than a label on a map or sign. They provide valuable insight into the history, culture and natural resources of areas where we live and visit. Geographic names are also an efficient way of keeping track of large amounts of spatial information and are essential for mapping, emergency response, resource management and conservation, travel and tourism, law enforcement and environmental planning.

  • Supports the operation of the Ontario Geographic Names Board (OGNB or the Board);
  • Maintains a database of official geographic feature and place names;
  • Develops geographic names related policy and procedures; and
  • Represents Ontario on the Geographic Names Board of Canada.
