A. Executive Summary
Staff responsible for geographic naming matters responded to 821 information requests and prepared 178 special purpose reports. The Ontario secretariat developed 69 survey/decision packages and distributed surveys and naming decisions to over 755 individuals or agencies.
The Board held three meetings and significantly dropped its back-log of cases to 30. In total, fifty-nine decisions on geographic names and/or their delineation geometries were made this fiscal including: 47 new approvals; 1 altered application; 1 name change; 2 name rescissions; 5 decisions on names or geometries not meeting Ontario Geographic Names Board (OGNB) principles, and 3 deferrals.
The Board received endorsement of their new principles from the Ontario Minister of Natural Resources in June 2010. New names arising from new mapping in the Far North and submitted by Pikangikum First Nation are currently awaiting final approval.
In addition, 922 record updates were made to attribute fields in the Geographic Name Extent layer (GEL), and over 5,000 digital extents were added to support various projects including Far North mapping, National Hydrographic Network and the new geographic names web mapping service.
