The Old Growth Forest Definitions for Ontario provides working definitions for identifying old growth in Ontario’s forests. The old growth definition report has been prepared to complement and support the Old Growth Policy for Ontario's Crown Forests. The old growth policy directs that old growth conditions in Ontario's Crown forests will be identified using the age-of-onset and duration periods defined in the old growth definitions report. Policy developers, resource management planning teams, resource managers, specialists and practitioners should consult the old growth policy to ensure the appropriate use of the old growth definitions report.

The Old Growth Policy for Ontario's Crown Forests - Version 1.0 (MNR 2003) and the Old Growth Forest Definitions for Ontario (MNR 2003) were prepared to comply with Term and Condition 103 (a) of the Reasons for Decision and Decision: Class Environmental Assessment by the Ministry of Natural Resources for Timber Management on Crown Lands in Ontario as approved by the Environmental Assessment Board on April 5, 1994.
