Each year, Ontario’s forests are affected by many types of natural disturbances, ranging from wildfire and severe weather, to insects and a wide variety of diseases. In cooperation with the Canadian Forest Service (CFS), the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) conducts extensive surveys of all types of forest disturbances.

Detailed mapping of affected area is conducted each field season, based on the size and severity of each disturbance. Most surveys and mapping are completed with the use of aircraft, followed by ground checks to collect samples and data.

Once the maps are compiled, they are used to estimate volume losses and summarized for our annual report. The summary maps posted on this site are generated to give users an overview of where these infestations have occurred.
