Bulk shipments can be made in regular sized bags as long as they are palletized. There is a stacking method that is used by the Ontario Tree Seed Plant for more stability during transportation. The following is a step-by-step instruction for stacking the bags on pallets.
Step 1 (see figure 1)
Place the cone filled bags on the pallet with the "bag ears" vertical to the pallet. Create a good strong base with the bag ties facing the center of the pallet. Depending on the size of the pallet, 5 or 6 bags can be used.

Step 2 (see figure 2)
Place a bag in the middle of the bottom layer to create a "stacking effect". Proceed with adding bags until another layer is completed. This creates an even weight distribution over the pallet.

Continue this procedure until a maximum of 4 or 5 layers are on the pallet. The bags can be shipped this way or wrapped in plastic to add extra stability. (see figure 3)

Additional Notes
Jack Pine and Black Spruce cones being shipped in burlap bags must be palletized on skids with 60 liters per bag. Arrange the bags on the skid 4 or 5 tiers high and 5 to 6 bags per tier, depending on the skid size. Ensure the skids are in good condition and that the bags, when placed on the skid, do not interfere with the pallet trucks or forks of fork lifts.
Black Spruce collected prior to December 1st, must be placed and shipped in trays. (maximum volume of 40 liters per tray) Black Spruce collected after December 1st can be shipped in burlap bags or on trays.
Bags of Jack Pine or Black Spruce placed on skids must be of the same collection area and accompanied with the appropriate documentation to avoid confusion once they arrive at the Ontario Tree Seed Facility.
Prior to any shipment, please contact the Ontario Tree Seed Facility to make the necessary arrangements.
