Seed Zones - What are they?
Seed zones were developed to ensure that the variation of growing season length (climatic parameters) within each zone corresponds with the variation of commercial tree species in the province.
The Ontario Climate Model was used to develop the seed zones. The model helped to balance climatic variability and risk within each zone. Boundaries of the seed zones were drawn to coincide with nearby geographic or administrative boundaries.
The Ontario Climate Model uses specialized Geographic Information System (GIS) software and expertise developed by the Australian National University. The model combines climatic data from 400 weather stations across Ontario with a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to generate and map climatic “surfaces”, such as precipitation during the growing season and growing season length. Overlays of these surfaces are the basis of homogeneous climate zones for areas of the province where the climatic regime is more similar than surrounding areas.

Terms and Conditions of Sales Price
Minimum Orders
Our minimum seed order charge is $50.00: the order may include a variety of species. Trial packets of approximately 100 seeds are available for $5.00 each. The minimum charge does not apply to the trial packets.
Cancellations/Returns
Any order cancellations or changes must be made in writing. Once an order is accepted, cancellations cannot be made without our consent. Special orders cannot be cancelled by the customer. Seeds cannot normally be returned without the express written permission of the Ontario Tree Seed Facility. In all cases, goods cannot be returned after they have been accepted, cleaned, processed, improperly stored, planted, or otherwise treated, modified, or used in any way.
Guarantee
We guarantee all seed to be correctly labelled and shipped in the condition described by the statistical data associated with that seed. Every effort is made to provide the highest quality seed available; however, we are unable to offer warranty, implied or expressed, with respect to seed viability.
Contingencies
We reserve the right to allocate, distribute or cancel any order, in whole or in part, because of: strikes, labour shortages, fire, flood, drought, disease, casualty, errors in count, spoilage, or other circumstances beyond our control.
Taxes
Any taxes arising from the purchase, use, or resale of the goods, such as import duty, sales tax, or any other tax, is the responsibility of the buyer.
Payment & Shipping Terms
Accounts may be paid by cheque, money order, or major credit card. Cheques should be payable to the Minister of Finance. Commercial drafts from established firms should be drawn on a Canadian bank. Overdue accounts will be charged interest at the rate of 6%, subject to change based on the fluctuating economy.
Buyer assumes ownership and responsibility for goods at the time of shipment. Please allow up to five (5) weeks for processing an order. An 13% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) will be charged unless customers file an exemption certificate or include a vendor permit. C.O.D. is not acceptable.
All seed is shipped at the buyer’s risk and expense from the Ontario Tree Seed Facility in Angus. We charge for packing materials at cost. We will ship by Canpar unless other means have been agreed upon.
Receiving & Acceptance
Seed is perishable. All shipments should be immediately and carefully un-packed and inspected on arrival and then placed in proper storage, (conditions that minimize changes in seed quality) as specified in the package. Any problems with the condition of the seed, or quality or quantity of stock received should be brought to our attention immediately. Quantity is proved by shipping documents.
Claims
Claims for any cause must be made in writing within five (5) to seven (7) days of the shipment date, whichever period of time is expressly agreed to be reasonable. If the buyer does not give such notice, the buyer agrees to have unconditionally accepted the goods.
The Ontario Tree Seed Facility will not consider any claim after the seed has been cleaned, processed, improperly stored, planted, or otherwise treated, modified, or used in any way. Claims for losses while goods are in transit must be filed directly with the carrier.
These terms and conditions of sale by the Ontario Tree Seed Facility may not be changed or amended except by written agreement signed by an officer of the Ontario Tree Seed Facility. By acceptance of the seed, the buyer acknowledges that the limitations and disclaimers described herein are the conditions of sale and that they constitute the entire agreement between buyer and seller.
Import/Export Terms
Foreign shipments often require special packing, handling and document preparation.
Import Restrictions
The buyer must first consult with the authorities of the importing country and then advise the Ontario Tree Seed Facility of all applicable importation restrictions, pre-export inspections, fungicidal treatments or fumigation required, and special documentation needed to import the seeds into their country. The seed facility will endeavor to comply with customer’s requests for assistance in meeting the regulations of the importing country. However, the responsibility in all matters related to such regulations is ultimately with the buyer and we assume absolutely no liability whatsoever.
Import Permits
Many countries require an import permit to import seeds or other living plant products. Please FAX us a copy of your permit at least two (2) weeks prior to the expected shipping date. If we do not receive your import permit prior to shipment, we will assume none is required.
Phytosanitary Certification
We will provide a Phytosanitary Certificate (PC) issued by the proper authority in Canada. The buyer will be charged for our costs to obtain the inspection and issuance of the PC. The seed facility accepts no responsibility or liability in connection with the issuing authority’s errors or omissions in the inspection or preparation of the PC.
Export Documents
The Phytosanitary Certificate, Certificate of Origin, and ISTA Certificate may require a fee. Call the Ontario Tree Seed Facility for current prices.
Export Packing
We will use the materials and method of packing we judge best, unless given specific instructions by the buyer. We normally pack in cardboard boxes suitable for long distance travel. However, in spite of all the precautions, shipments may sustain damage in transit and buyers are urged to inspect shipments immediately.
Insurance
We can arrange insurance for loss or damage in transit at the buyers request. Insurance costs and claims are the responsibility of the buyer. If the goods are not insured, they travel at the risk of the buyer.
Customs & Quarantine Clearance
It is the responsibility of the buyer to handle the clearance of the goods through their country’s customs and agricultural quarantine or inspection service. The Ontario Tree Seed Facility cannot assist or participate in such matters and therefore accepts no responsibility or liability in connection therewith.
Suppliers Certificates for Seed Orders
Suppliers Certificates are available on request and can be sent with every seed order. They consist of a written statement and a graph that shows the seed lot’s germination rate. Germination is determined by the percentage of the seed lot that will produce normal seedlings in the time specified by the I.S.T.A. (International Seed Testing Association). Seeds are stored in our freezers at a temperature of –18° C or 0° F. Seed viability is re-tested if seed is stored for 3 or more years.
Seed Technology Information
Many seeds are dormant, meaning the viable seed is conditioned by nature to prevent germination. By simulating key conditions of the natural environment that these seeds would be in, dormancy can be broken and the seeds can be induced to germinate. This is called stratification.
Stratification is a pre-germination treatment used to break dormancy in seeds and to promote rapid, uniform germination. This is accomplished by exposing seed for a specified time to moisture at near freezing temperatures, sometimes with preceding exposure to moisture at room temperature.
Dormancy is a state that prevents germination under environmental conditions favourable for growth.
A manual entitled Guidelines for Seed Pretreatmentis available for a more in-depth explanation of seed pre-treatment.
To order the Guidelines for Seed Pretreatment, please contact the Ontario Tree Seed Facility or fill out the order form (pdf) and fax or mail it to us. The price of this document is $20.00 Can. + tax.
Cone Purchasing Details

Open/Extracted cones that are suitable for ornamental purposes are kiln dried with high heat and do not contain seed.
All varieties are valued at $8.00 per bag.
The bag size is approximately 1.5 bushels or 60 litres.
Please call for available varieties as they change per season.
