Strategic Policy

Strategic Policy Documents:

Strategic policies direct the ministry (or the government as a whole) over an extended period. They state an overall intent, and provide guidance for subsequent policy and program development.

Some strategic policies are entrenched in legislation. Examples include portions of the Crown Forest Sustainability Act and the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act.

Strategic policies are also set out in broad statements of intent, which set the overarching goals for government as a whole for a five year period. Examples include Ontario’s Biodiversity Strategy and the Provincial Policy Statement issued under the Planning Act.

Strategic policies may provide integrated direction for a range of programs, such as MNR’s “Our Sustainable Future”, or they may provide higher-order direction focused on a specific ministry program, while ensuring integration across other relevant program areas such as the Policy Framework for Sustainable Forests.

Policy Framework for Sustainable Forests

The Policy Framework for Sustainable Forests (1994), is a policy statement of the Ontario Government that reflects the provincial interest in the stewardship of our forests regardless of land ownership and supports provincial and national commitments to sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. These commitments are entrenched in law in the Crown Forest Sustainability Act. All forest policies and associated decisions and management practices affecting the protection and sustained use of forest lands and resources across the province should be consistent with these strategic directions.
