Forestry is a vibrant and important part of Ontario’s economy. It sustains a $12-billion industry and delivers hundreds of thousands of jobs to hundreds of communities across Ontario.
The economic recession exposed major flaws in Ontario’s forest tenure and pricing system. A long and constructive dialogue with the forest industry and rural, northern and Aboriginal communities, confirmed that the system must be modernized.
This document introduces forest tenure modernization and explains the context, goals and objectives for this major reform to Ontario’s forest tenure policy. It also outlines the transition to new governance models that will incorporate greater Aboriginal and local community involvement in forest tenure.
The modernization process will use more market forces to make the system more flexible, and responsive to today’s fast-changing economic environment. It will help put Ontario’s Crown forests to work for all Ontarians.
