Scaling Courses

In Ontario, no person can remove harvested Crown forest resources (trees) from the place of harvest unless they have been measured.

The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) is responsible for setting the standards for measurement of Crown forest resources (scaling) including training and certification of government and forest industry personnel on scaling, auditing, and utilization standards. A provincial scaling course and scaler refresher courses are held annually in spring, summer and fall.   

Scaler Refresher Course

To ensure scaler competency, the Scaling Manual requires that all active scalers measuring for Crown timber must be re-certified once every three years. Scaling Refresher courses provide additional training to ensure: uniform scaling practices throughout the province, compliance with the Scaling Manual and provides opportunities for continuing instruction to scalers on scaling methods for their particular region. Emphasis on the various methods of measurement may vary between regions as training must be representative of the actual scaling requirements of the area.
