Forest Industry at a Glance
The Ontario’s Forest Industry at a Glance map (2013), shows the locations of management units, Sustainable Forest Licensees, and licensed forest resource processing facilities (active mills in Ontario from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013).
Sustainable Forest Licences
Forest management is undertaken on each management unit in Ontario and that responsibility is licenced by the Ministry except in the case where forest management responsibilities have been undertaken by the Crown. Sustainable Forest Licences (SFLs) are the primary form of licence. A number of SFLs are held by forestry corporations that operate a large forest processing facility such as a pulp mill and/or sawmill that receives forest resources from the management unit. These are commonly referred to as “single entity SFLs”. Several management units are licenced to cooperative or shareholder style SFLs where several companies interested in Crown timber from a management unit come together to form a new company to hold the licence.
There are also several management units that are not licenced under an SFL and are managed by the Crown. The Algonquin Park Forest is managed by the Algonquin Forestry Authority which is a Crown agency.
Forest Dependent Communities
Ontario’s forest sector is a key component of the province’s economy. In total, it supports almost 200,000 direct and indirect jobs in over 260 Ontario communities. Of these communities, 40 are categorized as highly dependent on employment in the forest sector to survive. An additional 63 are identified as being moderately dependent.
