Annual Report on Forest Management - 2007/08

This is Ontario's twelfth annual report on forest management. It covers the fiscal year April 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008.
 
Key highlights from this report include:

 

  • A summary of forest management planning activities during the period;
  • A description of the financial benefits for the citizens of Ontario. Forest product sales were estimated at $15 billion, and resulted in employment for approximately 168,000 people (direct, indirect and induced).
  • The Crown collected almost $130 million in revenue from the disposition of timber;
  • A description of areas disturbed by natural events and by harvesting activities. Forest fire activity was much lower than the provincial average level during the year affecting 39,089 hectares. Harvesting occurred on 158,478 hectares, which was lower compared to the provincial average over the last 5 years;
  • A summary of forest renewal and maintenance activities;
  • A description of monitoring, compliance and audit activities; the report also summarizes 9 independent forest audits that were conducted during the year;
  • A summary of the status of Forest Certification in Ontario;
  • A summary of efforts to achieve a more equal participation by Aboriginal peoples in forest management activities, and
  • A description of scientific and policy advancements made during the year.
