This is Ontario's twelfth annual report and it is the fourth in the series that has been produced in a new format consistent with the conditions of the Class EA Approval for Forest Management on Crown Lands in Ontario (2003). It covers the fiscal year April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007
Key highlights from this report include:
- A summary of forest management planning activities during the period;
- A description of the financial benefits for the citizens of Ontario. Forest product sales were estimated at $17 billion, and resulted in employment for approximately 219,000 people.
- The crown collected almost $163 million in revenue from the disposition of timber;
- A description of areas disturbed by natural events and by harvesting activities. Forest fire activity was much higher than the provincial average level during the year affecting 144,838 hectares. Harvesting occurred on 183,793 hectares, which was lower compared to the provincial average over the last 5 years;
- A summary of forest renewal and maintenance activities;
- A description of monitoring, compliance and audit activities; the report also summarizes 15 independent forest audits that were conducted during the year;
- A summary of the status of Forest Certification in Ontario;
- A summary of efforts to achieve a more equal participation by Aboriginal peoples in forest management activities, and
- A description of scientific and policy advancements made during the year.
