Ontario is a member of the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers (CCFM). On December 15, 2008, the CCFM released A Vision for Canada’s Forests: 2008 and Beyond” which is the successor to the “National Forest Strategy: 2003-2008” The document supports the work of the MNR and its partners in advancing sustainable forest management. It focuses on two priorities: transforming the forest sector, and climate change.
The Vision builds on the successes of the past national strategies, and describes its intended role relative to jurisdictional, national and international initiatives and commitments. The development of the document included public reviews of both a Discussion Paper and the draft Vision, leading to the final Vision document. A national workshop was held in April 2008 to get additional input. The Vision recognizes that government agencies and interested parties will address current challenges according to their own circumstances and mandates.
The full realization of the Vision is based on the participation of all traditional forest sector members, as well as non-traditional participants (e.g. bio-energy, plastics, chemicals).
