I would recommend that any forester graduate or future forester graduate, look into the MNR’s Forester Internship Program because it does provide a great opportunity and there are a variety of locations in Ontario to work. I recommend taking a chance to go to the small communities.
So far the benefits for me as a forester intern have included: becoming involved in a lot of advanced training; getting to travel throughout the province of Ontario; networking with a variety of people; and developing hard skills and soft skills.
Working in Chapleau district has provided me with an abundance of experience.
Its given me a great opportunity to work day to day, being mentored by an area forester and taking on more responsibilities than in some other location where forester interns are located.

I applied to the Forester Intern Program because I already had private industry and federal government experience in forestry and I wanted more of a provincial perspective.
I wanted an understanding of how the MNR managed the forests in Ontario and worked with private industry.
It’s a good opportunity to work in the MNR office because I can work with many different sections and get a broader perspective of what happens in the office. And it’s also good to work with people with such a rich forestry background.
I definitely would recommend the Forester Internship Program. It’s a great experience. I’ve gained a lot of valuable skills. I learned a lot about MNR structure. And its helped me to determine if I’m interested in an MNR career in the future or if I would like to pursue more private industry experience.
