Forest Biofibre - Allocation and Use (Forest Management Directive FOR 03 02 01)

There is growing concern with human impact on the environment and how it may be affecting the earth’s climate. The use of non-renewable fossil fuels is seen as a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. To assist in addressing these environmental issues there is a need to make a shift to a low-carbon economy by using renewable resources such as forest biofibre to provide energy and materials currently derived from non-renewable fossil fuels.

This forest management policy directive guides the allocation, pricing and use of forest biofibre:

  • to ensure that harvest of biofibre is carried out in an environmentally sustainable manner
  • to reduce Ontario’s dependence on fossil fuels by encouraging the use of forest biofibre for bioenergy, biofuel and other products currently derived from fossil fuels; and
  • to create and support opportunities to diversify and strengthen Ontario’s economy.
