Annual Report on Forest Management - 2005/2006

This is Ontario's eleventh annual report and it is the third in the series that has been produced in a new format consistent with the conditions of the Class EA Approval for Forest Management on Crown Lands in Ontario (2003).

 

Key highlights from this report include:

 

  • A summary of forest management planning activities during the period;
  • A description of the financial benefits for the citizens of Ontario. Forest product sales were estimated at $18.2 billion, and resulted in employment for approximately 230,000 people.
  • The crown collected almost $141 million in revenue from the disposition of timber;
  • A description of areas disturbed by natural events and by harvesting activities. Forest fire activity was below average during the year affecting 42,422 hectares. Harvesting occurred on 204,959 hectares;
  • A summary of forest renewal and maintenance activities;
  • A description of monitoring, compliance and audit activities. An audit regulation was passed in 2004, and the report summarizes 11 independent forest audits that were conducted during the year;
  • A summary of efforts to achieve a more equal participation by Aboriginal peoples in forest management activities, and
  • A description of scientific and policy advancements made during the year.
