Defining a Clearcut

This technical note provides interim direction to planning teams that will allow for consistency in meeting Forest Management Planning Manual (FMPM) requirements related to forest disturbance and clearcuts.

This note will be in affect until the new guide “Forest Management Guide for Natural Disturbance Pattern Emulation” is completed. The note provides a definition for “forest disturbances” which include clearcuts and fire. Forest disturbances will be viewed as individual events if they are separated by time (at least 20 years) or space (at least 200m with suitable vegetation). The note also discusses how to measure and evaluated planned and actual clearcuts, and the requirement to move towards a more natural pattern of historical disturbances.
