Status Summary of the Ministry of Natural Resources Forest Management Guide Review and Consolidation Project
Review dates and consolidation details for new guide series
Ontario has a number of forest management guides. Most will be revised and replaced when they become part of one or more of a new set of 5 guides. This consolidation is in response to an independent review of all guides undertaken in 2000 and documented in the “Review of Forest Management Guidelines” (2000). Based on this consultants’ report and recommendations from the Provincial Forest Technical Committee, MNR decided to rewrite the guides as:
Completed:
- Silvicultural Guides (2003)
- Tourism Guide (completed - 2001; reviewed 2006)
- Cultural Heritage Values Guide (completed - 2007)
Forcasted completion:
- Stand/Site Guide (forecasted completion – 2009)
- Landscape Guide - Great Lakes - St. Lawrence (forecasted completion - 2009) Boreal (forecasted completion - 2010)
A document titled “Ontario's Forest Management Guides: An Introduction,” provides background and a brief overview of the new forest management guides. As required by Condition 38(c) of the Declaration Order regarding MNR's Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Approval for Forest Management on Crown Lands in Ontario (MNR-71), each guide will be reviewed within 5 years of its approval and thereafter at least every five years. This status summary has been prepared in accordance with condition 38(b) of the EA approval.
