The Far North Branch and Applied Research and Development Branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources are pleased to announce the completion of Aquatic Ecosystems of the Far North State of Knowledge Report by T.R. Marshall and N.E. Jones. Preparation of this report has been supported by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) as part of the Far North Information and Knowledge Management project.
Under the Far North Land Use Planning Initiative, First Nation communities are working jointly with MNR on land use planning for the Far North of Ontario. Land use planning is a process to describe where land use activities take place; it makes decisions about what areas to dedicate for protection and what areas are suitable for sustainable economic development. To support this planning initiative, MNR’s Far North Branch is working with partners to determine information needs, establish priorities, and support scientific inventory and mapping of the region’s biodiversity and natural resources to compliment local traditional knowledge.
The report Aquatic Ecosystems of the Far North State of Knowledge contributes to our knowledge of the Far North of Ontario and will be useful in assisting First Nation communities and resource planners. It identifies what we currently understand about the Far North aquatic ecosystems and also identifies areas where we need further information. We are confident that you will find it a valuable resource.
