Moose Program Review

What is the Moose Program Review?

In 2007, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced a broad review of Ontario's moose management program.  The review focuses on four components of moose management.  There are two phases to the review. Phase 1 is focused on enhancing Ontario’s moose management program, while Phase 2 focuses specifically on improvements to the resident moose tag draw.

What's happened so far?

Phase 1 - Ontario's Moose Management Program

Phase 1 Information Package

Almost 1,600 comments were received during preliminary Phase I consultation. These comments helped inform the development of four draft policies and procedural guidelines.

Summary of the comments from consultation

Draft policies and guidelines were posted on the Environmental Registry for public comment from February 24 to April 9, 2009.

The ministry received and reviewed comments from written submissions, the Environmental Registry, stakeholder organizations, and from the Phase 2 consultation sessions and questionnaires. The policy documents were revised to reflect these comments.

Phase 2 - Improving the Resident Tag Draw

Phase 2 information package

As part of the Phase 2 of the Moose Program Review, public engagement and consultation took place through public consultation sessions in 27 locations, the distribution of questionnaires, and through comments received by other means. The purpose of this consultation was to gather ideas from the public on ways to improve the distribution of resident moose hunting opportunities.

More than 17,000 Phase 2 booklets/questionnaires containing information about the ideas and soliciting others were distributed, and over 1500 responses were received. Public consultation sessions began in February 2009. During these sessions, the ministry also met with close to 4,000 moose hunters to discuss these and other ideas.

Feedback and ideas received through preliminary Phase 2 consultation are being reviewed to help inform the development of potential ways to improve the distribution of resident moose hunting opportunities.
