Moose Program Review

What is the Moose Program Review?

In 2007, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced a broad review of Ontario's moose management program.  The review focuses on four components of moose management.  There are two phases to the review.

UPDATES - May 2009

Phase 2 -- Improving the Resident Tag Draw

The public engagement sessions, which sought ideas from the public on ways to improve the distribution of resident moose hunting opportunities, are now completed.

More than 17,000 Phase 2 booklets/questionnaires containing information about the ideas and soliciting others have been distributed since the sessions began in February.  The ministry also met with close to 4,000 moose hunters who participated in 27 public consultation sessions across Ontario to discuss these and other ideas.

Feedback and ideas received through Phase 2 consultation are now being reviewed to help inform the development of potential ways to improve the distribution of resident moose hunting opportunities.  Please check back regularly for updates.

Phase 1 -- Ontario's Moose Management Program

Consultation on the four draft policies and procedural guidelines (see below), developed as part of Phase 1, is now complete.   The ministry received comments through written submissions, the Environmental Registry, stakeholder organizations, and from the Phase 2 consultation sessions and questionnaires.

The comments are being reviewed and the documents are being revised to reflect these comments. The final versions are expected to be available in 2009 and will appear on this Moose Program Review website.

Phase 1 - Ontario's Moose Management Program

These policies and guidelines were posted on the Environmental Registry for public comment from February 24 to April 9, 2009:

1. Cervid Ecological Framework
2. Moose Management Policy
3. Population Objectives Setting Guidelines
4. Harvest Management Guidelines
