Deputy Conservation Officers

Deputy Conservation Officer
Deputy Conservation Officer.

Deputy Conservation Officers (DCO) are volunteers that assist Conservation Officers in carrying out natural resources law enforcement activities.   A DCO does not work independently, but always works in the immediate presence of a Conservation Officer.

What Does A Deputy Conservation Officer Do?

Deputy Conservation Officers may assist Conservation Officers when:

  • Checking fishing and hunting licences or bag limits
  • Conducting presentations and educational activities
  • Accompanying Conservation Officers on uniform patrol type duties

How Are Deputy Conservation Officers Appointed?

DCO's are appointed under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act by the Director of Enforcement.  The number of DCO's is determined according to the needs of each enforcement unit. To become a DCO, you must successfully complete the Ministry's 'Introduction to Law Enforcement' four week training course or an approved equivalent.  Many units have a waiting list for volunteers.
