A Windsor man has pleaded guilty and was fined $2,000 for poisoning wildlife in the city of Windsor.
George Chernawski was fined $1,000 for using poison to kill wildlife and $1,000 for capturing more wildlife than necessary to protect his property. In addition, the live trap he was using was forfeited to the Crown.
The court heard that a Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officer, acting on a complaint, investigated and determined that Chernawski put poison, mixed with an attractant, on top of a fence to kill wildlife. Numerous birds were killed as a result.
Under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, it is illegal to use any poison to kill wildlife because it can cause unnecessary suffering and may accidentally kill other wildlife. Additionally, it is illegal to capture more wildlife than is necessary to protect your property.
Justice of the Peace Elizabeth Nelson heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Windsor, on November 15, 2010.
